October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The NBCAM organization began over 25 years ago, and since then, it has become a leader in educating people and bringing about an awareness of breast cancer. One of eight American-born women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Additionally, next to heart disease, breast cancer is the second highest cause of death among women.
To honor NBCAM, people can participate in any of the national events that are being held. Those events aren’t exclusive to the month that recognizes awareness. They are held all over the country in major cities. In southern California, the Inland Empire Race for the Cure® takes place on October 20, 2013.
Other area organizations that support or conduct breast cancer research include the Avon Breast Cancer Center at UCLA-Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center or the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, Home of Love/Army of Women. One other way that people can get involved in raising funds and increasing awareness of the prevalence of this disease that robs women of their sense of womanhood is by creating your own fundraiser.
The key to surviving breast cancer is early detection, and for now, the best way to do that is with regular yearly mammograms, starting at age 40. That is why it is so important to have adequate insurance, especially in the form of individual and group health, disability insurance to help you if or when you cannot work or when you need critical care, and life insurance, just to ensure that you can provide for your family.
