During the process of the Affordable Care Act, President Obama emphasized how if you liked your insurance coverage you could keep it. Many Americans have been upset and frustrated being that they received notices stating their current policies were being cancelled and that they would be “mapped” to new plans which meet the ACA guidelines.
One remedy is that Anthem Blue Cross is extending policies for 104,000 customers for two months past their planned cancellation date, due to a delay in their notification process. This extension through February will give policy holders more time to change their expiring plans.
However, last Friday, President Obama encouraged insurance carriers to allow their customers to stay on their policies for another year through the end of December 2014. This is causing quite a stir among insurance companies that have already come up with their new rates and plans, based on the previous plans being off the market. The California Insurance Commissioner has stated he would like the carriers to honor Mr. Obama’s request.
At this point, we are all in a standstill to see what will happen and if the non-compliant plans will remain or if the mapping will be implemented.
